i did my first party boat fishing in 2008. Met some very extraordinary and talented fisherman. For the most part it was all a learning experience. Fluke, porgies, sea bass, blackfish and a striper that was just pure luck. Tom and his crew are well ahead of there game. The one constant was such attention to customer satisfaction, backed by outstanding fishing skills. A diverse knowledge of there fishing grounds and a very talented skipper completes the Atlantic Star. To ALL MY NEW FRIENDS ... thanks for everything! . . . Looking forward to seeing everyone in 2009.

Hi there--I couldn't find an e-mail address to send a note, but my son and I took our first trip on the Atlantic Star this past Sunday, 6/14--and we really had such a good time! I work full time, and try very hard to do fun things with my son on weekends...his Dad is not at all the sportsman, but my father was, and I used to go crabbing and fishing with him when I was very small. Someone told me about the Atlantic Star, and since I know my son would eat Fluke or Flounder if we caught something, I felt this would be the ideal trip.

Let me tell you, we arrived there last minute for the 1:30 sailing...the weather report that a.m. said no more rain for the day, and we RUSHED to make it! Although I'd spent time on boats as a child, I really know nothing about fishing, so the crew had to help me as much as they had to help my son. I did tell the crewman just to set us up with one rod, because I wanted to really be on top of my son so he wouldn't lose his own. They had a trick to tie it to the boat so that my son could fish, and when he needed to walk away (bathroom, snack), I didn't have to stop everything I was doing to take care of his line.

I wanted to thank you guys--we had such a good time, the weather was wonderful, and even though all we caught was a sea-robin and a skate, my son was in awe, had such a good time, and our crewman was so good to show these critters to my son, tell him about them, touch them, etc.

My boy had a really fun day, and I did too. I am really looking forward to coming back again.

Thanks so much for being so kind, and helping us every step of the way.

    Kathleen and John

This is the BEST boat to go out fishing on;Capt Tom has gone out of his way to make your fishing trip enjoyable . His crew of Rob and Chuck always there when you need them.
I have taken many fishing pals out and they have all wanted to come back out. But the best was when I took my 10 year old grandson out for the first time and Mate Rob helped him catch the fish of his life not to mention the biggest fish of the day. A first class Boat.
    Thanks Guys: Thom

    Tom,
I just wanted to drop a note on your BLOG. I had such a great time with my daughter when we went fishing this past week. As you know I am just about 40 and have been fishing with you as my captain for 35 years between the Happy and the Star. I have to say you have always run a great operation.
As always the crew on board was ever helpful to Anne who caught several shorts including 1 really nice sized keeper.(thats 1 more than her dad) It was the time of her life. We are sure to return making it a father/daughter tradition.

If you could tell Rob to send me the picture he took that would be great.

    Thanks,
    Josh

I have more fun seeing the kids catch fish than doing so myself. And Capt. Tom, Rob, Chuck, and Brian and most of the other fishermen on board always do their best to coach them!

Atlantic Star Report Friday 07-20 and Weekend

A 7-1/2-pound fluke was heaved in right away toward the beginning of this morning’s trip on the Atlantic Star, Capt. Tom said in a phone call during the first drift. Jim Waas from Bethlehem, Pa., caught that pool winning the fish, about the third of several keepers that had already been boated at Reach Channel , during a slow drift but with catches.

This afternoon with better conditions, some breeze, there was an improvement in the number of keepers mixed in with the shorts.. One angler finished with 4 including the pool fish that was about 5-1/2 pounds. Several had one or two.

Otherwise the fluking was about the same in the past days as it was before. Lots of the fish were usually hung on the bay when conditions or winds and tides created the right drifts, and everybody on the trips reeled in the fish, and a few of the flatties were keepers. One angler, Ben from Keansburg, had five keepers the other day, but that was the exception. Some anglers caught a keeper or more, and some landed none. Anglers who worked a Spro jig with skill probably scored better, but no tackle or bait seemed an advantage over another.

One little girl on Sunday afternoon boated three fluke, and two were keepers. Trips fished places including Reach Channel, Flynn’s Knoll, Chapel Hill Channel and near the Navy Pier. Saturday afternoon’s trip was probably one of the best for action, and conditions were perfect, and a load of fluke came up. Many were an inch or a ½-inch undersized or 17 to 17 ½ inches, beautiful fluke that had to be thrown back. But some anglers bagged two or three keepers.

The next morning’s trip sailed right back to the same place, and the fishing failed to happen much, and the conditions weren’t there. In the afternoon conditions failed to pan out at first at the same place, and the fishing was slow, but then the drift improved, and so did the fishing. The bottom line was that when conditions were right, plenty of fluke were usually caught, and some were keepers.

Over the weekend Pool-winning fluke were usually 4 pounds, occasionally 5 pounds. The bay was 70 degrees, probably cool for the time of year. The Atlantic Star is fluke fishing on two trips daily 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

    C'mon down we'll save you a spot!

    Capt Tom and Mate Chuck,
Out with you on 10/20/09. Great day outside 3 mile limit, trip was worth it. You put us on fish, going the extra mile, no pun intended payed off with many filling their buckets and then some. Fished the starboard stern had a ball. Will try for one more day before it gets to cold for these old bones.
P.S. Chuck - Figured catch as less than $2.49/lb...LOL
